Dear Friends,

Over the past few years I have heavily involved myself in the School Choice movement because of its crucial role in the future of Catholic school education.

To this end, below you will find a flyer with information regarding our upcoming School Choice Information Night which will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2013.  I ask that you please consider attending this event and please invite as many of your friends as possible.

This event will feature Mr. Allan Parker, President of The Justice Foundation.  Mr. Parker continues to be at the forefront of School Choice Awareness.  Given his long history with this issue I am sure that he will have many inspiring words to share with us.

Given that National School Choice Week begins on Sunday, January 27th, I can’t think of a better time for us to join together and show our support for School Choice.

I look forward to seeing you!

Sincerely,

Bro. Stanley Culotta, CSC, MD

There will be a Beautification Day on September 8th from 9 a.m.  to 12 p.m.  The Middle School and High School can count the hours for service, however the High School students must count the hours as “non-core”  or “single event” service hours.

Please report to the patio area behind the grotto.  Volunteers are advised to bring the following necessary items: gloves, knee pads, hat, and bug spray. Other helpful tools would be: shovels, brooms, weed eaters, pruners, power sprayers.   Students and adults will be laying fresh mulch, weeding, edging, power spraying, a little planting of some flowers in the front, and rose bush trimming around the grotto. Waters and snacks will be available. Donations are appreciated.  Please contact Didi Gracia with questions and ideas–210-393-3844 or didig@satx.rr.com

This past week I (Bro. Stanley) attended the introductory meeting of the Catholic School Advantage Campaign.  Launched by the Alliance for Catholic Education at the University of Notre Dame as an outcome of a national Task Force on the Participation of Latino Children and Families in Catholic Schools, the goal of the Campaign is to improve educational opportunities for Latino children.

Among the many dismal statistics describing the educational status of Latino children in the United States is that only 3% (273,000) are enrolled in Catholic schools.  One of the objectives is to double this figure to 6% within the next few years.  The presenter, Rev. Joe Corpora recalled many other frightening statistics such as the level of education, the dropout rate and the poverty of Latinos.

The proposed goal of the Catholic School Advantage Partnership is to maximize the number of Latino children enrolled in Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of San Antonio.  To accomplish these objectives, the Notre Dame team will work in partnership with the Archdiocese of San Antonio.  Additionally, Notre Dame will serve as an ongoing base of operations for research and project development, educate teachers and leaders, and strengthen private and publicly funded scholarship programs throughout the country.

The next session, a working session is planned for late November.  Stay tuned!
