Councilman Cris Medina of District 7 held his annual Leadership in Excellence Holiday Banquet on Dec. 5 at St. Luke’s Parish Hall. Ambassador Cassidy Sanchez, Sophomore, Ambassador Ashley Mendoza, Senior, and Plácido D. García, Eighth Grader, joined Councilman Medina at the event. Commissioner Paul Elizondo of Precinct 2 was honored for his leadership in Bexar County. Commissioner Elizondo has been a strong supporter of Holy Cross over the years.

His nieces are Tiffany Hernandez Class of 2009 and Michelle Alvarado Class of 2009. His daughter Lillian (Lopez) Sanchez is the wife of Sam Sanchez Class of 1967.

WHO: ALL MEDIA INVITED. The Gates Millennium Scholarship has selected Holy Cross of San Antonio’s senior, Bianca Rosas, making her the third recipient in the school’s history. The Office of Congressman Joaquin Castro has issued a congratulatory letter which will be presented at the official announcement & ceremony. Additionally, Texas Representative Justin Rodriguez has passed a resolution in the scholar’s name and an official announcement will be made.

WHAT: Holy Cross of San Antonio’s senior, Bianca Rosas, is named the Gates Millennium Scholar 2013. Out of 54,000 applicants, she is one of 1,000 talented students nationwide selected for this distinguished and highly competitive scholarship which will cover her Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees. Ms. Rosas will be attending St. Edward’s University in Austin and pursuing her degrees in public health.

WHY: The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program selects 1,000 talented students each year to receive a good-through-graduation scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice. The GMS provides scholars with personal and professional development through leadership programs along with academic support throughout their college career.

Alejandro Barragán, Class of 2014

WHO: ALL MEDIA INVITED. Holy Cross of San Antonio is an independent Catholic co-educational middle and high school. Holy Cross serves as the only co-educational college preparatory school centrally located in San Antonio’s Westside. Based on the principles of the Brothers of Holy Cross, the school’s educational mission helps break the cycle of poverty and opens doors to higher education.

WHAT: Holy Cross of San Antonio will host an unveiling ceremony of a bronze bust of Saint André Bassette, C.S.C. sculpted by Jerry McKenna.  Alejandro Barragán, Class of 2014, is scheduled to receive the Boy Scout’s highest honor as Eagle Scout. As part of his Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project, he raised the funds to purchase a McKenna sculpture of St. André. Joining Alejandro at the ceremony will be Mr. McKenna, Mr. Jaime Medel, Scout Master, Holy Cross Board of Trustees, faculty and students as well as his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Barragán and relatives. The statue is being dedicated in memory of Mr. Eloy Chavarria, Class of 1982, a highly decorated military serviceman. His wife, Elsa, and family will be present.

WHY: Alejandro Barragán is a junior at Holy Cross of San Antonio and a member of the Boy Scouts Troop 450, Alamo Area Council. Alejandro chose as his Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project to raise the funds for a rare Jerry McKenna sculpture of the St. André bronze bust. Mr. McKenna, an accomplished sculptor, is also the sculptor of the bronze Four Horsemen at the University of Notre Dame. He too attended a Holy Cross founded school, St. Edward’s High School in Ohio. St. André was the first Brother of Holy Cross to be Canonized as a Saint proclaimed by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and officiated by the Vatican on Sun., Oct. 17, 2010.

Holy Cross Board of Trustee, Manuel P. Berriozabál, Ph.D., is named part of the inaugural fellowship group of the American Mathematical Society. He also recently received a high honor when Mayor Julián Castro named Café College after Dr. Berriozabál. The dedication of Café College is scheduled for later this month.
