(San Antonio) Holy Cross of San Antonio, President Set to Retire

San Antonio, TX- Brother Stanley Culotta, CSC, MD, is retiring after 56 years of service to Holy Cross of San Antonio. Brother Stanley Culotta is a member of the Congregation of Holy Cross and has been associated with Holy Cross of San Antonio since 1958.  His tenure since that time has ranged from beginning teacher to president, the position he holds today.  At the end of the 2015-2016 academic year, Brother Stanley Culotta will be officially retiring from Holy Cross of San Antonio.

“Brother Stanley has demonstrated and has lived out the mission of Holy Cross in a remarkable way,” said Mr. Henry Galindo, Principal at Holy Cross of San Antonio. He has made contributions to the religious, education, and health fields in our Westside communities, and has truly impacted this school and his work here will always be treasured.”

The Brothers of Holy Cross accepted the invitation of Archbishop Robert E. Lucey to administer a Catholic, college preparatory high school for boys to be located in the impoverished West Side of San Antonio.  The school was named Holy Cross High School and opened in 1957.  Since that time the school has expanded its offerings to become a coeducational Catholic, college preparatory middle and high school.  To respect this expansion, its name has been changed to Holy Cross of San Antonio.

Without the help and support from Ms. Viki Carr, a strong supporter of Holy Cross and its mission, Holy Cross would have had to close its doors. Fortunately, Brother Stanley and Brother Dooling, and Ms. Carr quickly thought of ways to keep Holy Cross open, holding numerous benefit concerts to help the Brothers.

In 1974 Brother Stanley Culotta left Catholic education.  His plan was to earn a medical degree and open a medical facility in the medically underserved area surrounding Holy Cross High School.  He entered the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas from which he received his medical degree in 1978.  In 1981 he completed his Family Practice Residency at McAllen General Hospital.

Brother Stanley then returned to San Antonio to open Holy Cross Family Medical Center.  From that time until 1995 he was a full time family physician including two years as Chief of Staff at Santa Rosa Hospital.

One year later, Brother Stanley was named Principal.  In 2001, Holy Cross of San Antonio adopted the President – Principal model of administration and he was named the President.

Brother Stanley Culotta is a product of Catholic education.  He graduated from St. James Major and Holy Cross High School in New Orleans, Louisiana, his home town.  In addition to his medical degree he has a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master’s Degree in Chemistry, both from the University of Notre Dame.

Since his return to Holy Cross of San Antonio in 1996, Brother Stanley Culotta has been a strong voice for School Choice.  He recognizes that in the near future without school choice a Catholic education may be available only to the wealthy. His efforts include presentations, workshops, published articles and political action.

Holy Cross of San Antonio is an independent Catholic co-educational middle and high school. The Brothers of Holy Cross founded the school in 1957 steeped in tradition and education. Holy Cross serves as the only co-educational college preparatory school centrally located in San Antonio’s Westside. Based on the principles of the Brothers of Holy Cross, the school’s educational mission helps break the cycle of poverty and opens doors to higher education.
