Jason Torres, Class of 2003 has enrolled at the University of Chicago graduate school to pursue a degree in Molecular Metabolism and Nutrition.  Along with his acceptance he has been awarded full tuition coverage and living expenses.  After graduating from Holy Cross Jason entered and graduated from St. Mary’s University in 2007.  During these intervening years he taught with the Kaplan Testing Center but persisted in his desire to pursue a career in the scientific field.  During this time Jason met and discussed his hopes with Robert Alaniz, Class of ‘87 and Alfred Alaniz, Class of ‘74.

Robert has his Ph.D. and is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology at Texas A & M College of Medicine.  Alfred has his Ph.D. in Astronomy and teaches at San Antonio College.  Through their encouragement and availing himself of their experiences, Jason met representatives of SACNAS (The Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in the Sciences).  Jason applied to the University of Chicago and was accepted. He started his studies this fall.

It was during the Annual Alumni Softball Tournament that Jason got to know Alfred and Robert Alaniz.  He proudly gives thanks for his good fortune to his Holy Cross connections.

  1. How great to see these stories of alumni helping other alumni. Holy Cross can truly say it is a family of faith and love.

  2. This is cause of the bond, support, and drive that Holy Cross delivers to it’s students. I am a grad of the class of 99′ and recently went back to look at my roots. I give Holy Cross all the credit in making me the person I am today. I still try to deliver that same message onto every young person I meet. I am currently serving as the hiring manager and supervisor for one of the most successful banks, J.P. Morgan Chase Bank. I have the task of hiring and over seeing a unit of folks who investigate fraud on credit cards. Let’s keep up the great work of showing our community the men that come out of Holy Cross. I still bleed blue and gold, and always give credit where it’s due. I am very proud to be apart of that Holy Cross Family!!!

  3. Congratulations to Jason Torres class of 2003. Good Luck in your pursuit of what seems to be a very complex and interesting degree.
It does not surprise me that the Alaniz brothers offered their encouragement and experiences to you and has led you to this field of endeavour.
If it was not for Alfred (Freddy) Alaniz and many other classmates I would have never made it out of Holy Cross. Freddy and the Alaniz Family are what epitomizes what a Holy Cross Man and now Woman can accomplish if you are determined to do so. I graduated with Freddy in 1974 from Holy Cross and have known him since elementary school at Holy Rosary. He is one of the most intelligent men I have had the honor to know and am very proud to call my friend.
