SAN ANTONIO (April 17, 2013) — Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) honored and recognized the accomplishments of student athletes throughout the 2012-2013 season during its second annual Big Blue All-Sports Athletic Banquet. The event was held in the Mabee Gymnasium and was emceed by Jay Tope, who will return next season to assume his duties as the Voice of the Saints.
The evening began with an invocation by OLLU President Sister Jane Ann Slater, CDP, PhD. Following dinner, a video recapping the seasons of all sports followed. Michael Thompson, who provides play-by-play announcing of basketball and volleyball games for OLLU, produced the video.
Vice President for Student Life and Athletic Director Jack Hank gave an overview of the seasons and thanked parents, coaches, students and staff for their dedication throughout the year. Each head coach presented various individual awards to their team-members.
The University instituted the first-ever Top Saint Awards this year. The head coaches of each team nominated one player who excelled in academics, athletics and community service as a member of his or her team in 2012-2013. The names and accomplishments of the nominees were then sent to the selection committee for voting of the Top Big Blue Saint Award.
The nominees included: Cross-Country’s Laura Echeverria; Men’s Basketball’s Juan “Eddie” Ortiz; Women’s Basketball’s Nashae Owens; Golf’s Aaron Flores; Men’s Soccer’s Martin Hansson; Women’s Soccer’s Nikole Gase; Softball’s Kailyn Miller; Men’s Tennis’ Matt Ellis (pictured at left); Women’s Tennis’ Leslie Cooper; and Volleyball’s Desirea Aguilar.

On April 17, the Student Knight Ambassadors visited St. Mary’s University. The students listened to presentations given by Mr. Thomas M. Mengler, J.D., President of St. Mary’s University, and his President’s Ambassadors. Here are some highlights from the evening.
The President of St. Mary’s University, Mr. Thomas M. Mengler, J.D., hosted the Holy Cross Student Knight Ambassadors on Wed., April 17 at the AT&T Technology Center for a Meet & Greet Dinner with his President’s Ambassadors.
Joining the Holy Cross Ambassadors were Ms. Elizabeth Eguia-Garcia, Vice President of Advancement & Public Relations at Holy Cross, Brother Stanley Culotta, C.S.C., M.D., President of Holy Cross, Mrs. Leticia Ramirez, Assistant Director of Stewardship at St. Mary’s University and Brother Dennis Bautista, S.M. Mrs. Ramirez is the St. Mary’s President’s Ambassadors Moderator and Program Administrator along with Brother Dennis who serves as the Marianist Moderator. Mrs. Ramirez also co-sponsors the Holy Cross Student Knight Ambassador Program along with Ms. Eguia-Garcia.

WHAT: Samuel Moreno, senior at Holy Cross of San Antonio, will do an official signing to Oklahoma Panhandle State University. The university has offered him a partial athletic-baseball scholarship and a partial academic scholarship to attend Panhandle State University in August 2013. He excels both academically and athletically. Moreno ranks 3rd in his class. He plays second baseman for the Holy Cross Knights baseball team. He also played quarterback for the Holy Cross Knights football team. His football team made it to state finals in November 2012. He will be joined at his official signing by his parents Mr. Tony and Mrs. Ruby Moreno.

WHAT: Holy Cross of San Antonio will host an unveiling ceremony of a bronze bust of Saint André Bassette, C.S.C. sculpted by Jerry McKenna. Alejandro Barragán, Class of 2014, is scheduled to receive the Boy Scout’s highest honor as Eagle Scout. As part of his Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project, he raised the funds to purchase a McKenna sculpture of St. André. Joining Alejandro at the ceremony will be Mr. McKenna, Mr. Jaime Medel, Scout Master, Holy Cross Board of Trustees, faculty and students as well as his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Barragán and relatives. The statue is being dedicated in memory of Mr. Eloy Chavarria, Class of 1982, a highly decorated military serviceman. His wife, Elsa, and family will be present.

WHY: Alejandro Barragán is a junior at Holy Cross of San Antonio and a member of the Boy Scouts Troop 450, Alamo Area Council. Alejandro chose as his Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project to raise the funds for a rare Jerry McKenna sculpture of the St. André bronze bust. Mr. McKenna, an accomplished sculptor, is also the sculptor of the bronze Four Horsemen at the University of Notre Dame. He too attended a Holy Cross founded school, St. Edward’s High School in Ohio. St. André was the first Brother of Holy Cross to be Canonized as a Saint proclaimed by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and officiated by the Vatican on Sun., Oct. 17, 2010.
