Samantha Santos, HC 9th Grader, shown with Diana Barrios-Treviño & Shelly Miles on SA Living June 19.

Miss Samantha Santos, Holy Cross ninth grader, received the Viola Huge Heart Foundation scholarship on May 29.

The Foundation is named after the late Viola Barrios, founder of Los Barrios Restaurant. Her three children created the foundation soon after her death in order to preserve the good memories of their beloved mother, Viola. Today, the foundation has awarded four scholarships. Miss Santos is the fourth recipient for her dedication to her studies, community service and extracurricular activities.

“At Holy Cross, we focus on building well rounded individuals,” said Ms. Elizabeth Eguía-García,  Holy Cross Vice President of Advancement & Public Relations. “Ultimately, Holy Cross is preparing them for college and the university level. Miss Santos embodies the traits that the Viola Huge Heart Foundation seeks to support. Holy Cross is proud of her.”

“We call the students who we select for this scholarship our ‘Little Violas,'” said Diana Barrios-Treviño. “They represent my mother’s heart as well as her generous and hardworking spirit.”

Miss Santos appeared on SA Living on June 19 along with Ms. Barrios-Treviño and Ms. Eguía-García. Throughout the year, Miss Santos will be participating in various events and activities promoting and supporting the Viola Huge Heart Foundation.

“Mr. Galindo, Brother Stanley and all of us at the school are deeply grateful to the Barrios Family for their generous support of Miss Santos and for their partnership with Holy Cross,” said Ms. Eguía-García.

On behalf of the David Vega Scholarship Selection Committee we want to thank each student for taking the time to apply to this memorial scholarship. Each application involved the students’ unique voice, level of community involvement and their post-high school goals. Each question allowed our review committee to gain a solid understanding of what it means to be a Holy Cross Knight. It was a tough and thorough process, which included the use of predefined criteria and a point-system from which we could use to weigh each candidate. The results included objective evaluations from six members, as well as post-evaluation group discussions to compare respective scores.

The applications were so compelling that our Selection Committee has decided to include a runner-up award for each grade level!

The following individuals were selected for the top award of $1,000:

Senior: Aaron Alfaro

Junior: Brianna Torres

The following individuals were selected for the runner-up award of $250:

Senior: Adam James

Junior: Jenessa Rivera

These awards will be applied to each students’ tuition fees for the 2015 school year. Thank you to the students who participated.

We also appreciate the assistance and support from the Holy Cross team in helping us make this first year a successful one. We continue to learn new and improved ways of making this scholarship even more successful in the future.

David Vega exemplified the essence of what a Holy Cross student aspires to be: Studious, Outgoing, Respectful of Others, and Passionate about giving back. Raised by immigrant parents of Mexican descent on the west side of San Antonio, David attended Holy Cross from 1984 until his untimely death in January, 1986. David was an all-around student, friend, and son. He played football, basketball and ran track and was seen as an all-around athlete. In the classroom, David excelled in math, physics and chemistry. As a friend, David was close to many of his classmates and many called him their brother. After high school, David aspired to be the first in his family to attend college. He had aspirations of becoming an engineer and working for a large company an helping out his family.

David’s legacy reminds us that anyone, regardless of background, can achieve great things with a combination of passion, a plan and a great attitude. We remember David today as we follow the Holy Cross Code.
